Not only does it look more presentable to your visitors, but search engines also appreciate the clean URLs for each page on your website.
Having a page on your website with URL www.johnsmithactor.com/contact is much better than www.johnsmithactor.com/index.
I'm not sure the latter one would ever fit on your business card, nor would anybody want to try and type this out if the link was not clickable for some reason.
Keep it short, keep it simple, keep it user-friendly.
